Laura S.: Could Speaking Up Prevent Maternal Deaths from Thrombosis?

Laura S., Writer at Substack, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It was World Thrombosis Day last week, and Alicia Kearns bravely shared her own experience of the leading cause of maternal death in the UK, helping bring this important issue into Parliament to prevent more women dying from thromboembolic events.

The issues described within her account of primary care Royal College of General Practitioners resonates with writing I have done recently on governance and moral leadership.

Despite our best efforts, compassionate, thorough family medicine can still be reframed as poor performance when we are measured against targets and or when GPs speak up, concerns can be procedurally erased by the organisation that reverts back to you for change and nothing actually changes.

Ultimately, our patients and communities carry the consequences of these failings that present as completed processes stored as organisational memory that is inaccessible, isolated and obsolete.

I believe there is no greater privilege than to be trusted by our patients with their lives and their histories every day.

I was simply doing my job. Upholding the values and standards of our profession, and holding ourselves to account despite the pressures, saved Alicia’s life.

Moral courage and active bystandership matter Kath Higgins.
