Nickie Enos: Blood Clots in Arteries and Veins Differ in Symptoms and Treatment
Nickie Enos, Board Certified Operating Room Nurse, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I Got a Blood Clot
We discussed a thrombus versus an embolus.
Thrombus is stationary.
But what is the difference between a clot in the artery in my leg versus the vein you ask?
Thrombus in the artery (acute arterial occlusion) will have symptoms of pain, limb paralysis, coldness, a missing pulse, pallor. This is an emergency because the tissue is becoming ischemic (no oxygen, no bueno). This leads to cell death.
Thrombus in the vein will have symptoms of swelling, pain, be hot to the touch and redness. The concern with a deep vein thrombus is that it can dislodge, break off (the clot that is) and then you have a thromboembolism.
Can you treat both with an anticoagulant?
Yes.
The blocked artery needs a declot procedure to remove the clot and re-establish blood flow.”
