Dianne E. van der Wal: Cryopreserved Platelets in Transfusion Medicine
Dianne E. van der Wal, Researcher at ANZAC Research Institute (Sydney Local Health District), posted on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH Journal, adding:
“Just returned from Outback Australia
Platelets are small blood cells, essential for cessation of bleeding and therefore a lifesaving treatment for bleeding trauma, surgery, cardiac and cancer patients.
During their conventional storage at Room temperature, they deteriorate rapidly within 7 days, also due to bacterial growth.
Alternative storage methods include storage in the cold or freezing.
I just returned from the remote Outback NSW, and Flying Doctor service in Broken Hill and it became even more clear that these products are important when fresh donations are unavailable.
I’m very proud to have been invited and have written this review on pros and cons incl. history, laboratory data, animal models and clinical trials assessing efficacy and safety of cryopreserved platelet products,
together with Katrijn Six, Hendrik Feys, TReC (Transfusion Research Center) following the latest CLIP clinical trial.
Now in RPTH Journal.”
