Ravi C Dara: What’s New in ASFA’s 10th Edition – Practical Updates for the Apheresis Clinician
Ravi C Dara, Consultant Physician Transfusion Medicine at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Grateful to present ‘What’s New in ASFA‘s 10th Edition: Practical Updates for the Apheresis Clinician” at the Frontiers in Laboratory Innovation, Advances in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine conference at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
The guidelines themselves are the work of the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) Writing Committee and its expert authors, who review the evidence indication by indication so that all of us can practise with more confidence. My talk is only a clinician’s summary of their work, and I encourage everyone to read the full 10th edition guidelines.
Key points from the talk:
- The 10th edition adds 2 new fact sheets (MOGAD and non-sickle hemoglobinopathies) and reviews 183 indications
- 6 indications moved up and 3 moved down. All 9 category changes involve plasma exchange
- Category (the role of apheresis) and Grade (the strength of evidence) are two different things, and reading both matters in practice
A special thank you to the organizers at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi for an excellent programme, and to my colleagues in the UAE Transfusion Medicine Working Group for their constant support and learning together.
I also showed a short animated demo of the 7 main apheresis procedures (TPE, RBC exchange, ECP, immunoadsorption, DFPP and LA, leukocytapheresis and thrombocytapheresis). I am sharing it free for teaching. It runs in any browser, on phone or laptop, with no download.
Please use it with your teams and trainees, and keep the credit line. Feedback is welcome.”
