Mehak Trehan: Why ANC Reference Ranges Should Reflect Genetic Diversity

Mehak Trehan, Subject Matter Expert at DailyRounds, shared American Society of Hematology’s post on LinkedIn:

“A low ANC isn’t always pathological! ASH’s work reinforces the need for ancestry aware reference ranges to avoid unnecessary investigations and treatment interruptions.

Indian takeaway: With our genetic diversity, we need locally validated ANC reference ranges not a one size fits all approach based on Western cutoffs.”

American Society of Hematology shared a post on LinkedIn:

“ASH has established new reference ranges for individuals with Duffy null status, helping clinicians interpret blood counts more accurately to reduce unnecessary testing and treatment interruptions.

Duffy null status is a common genetic trait associated with naturally lower circulating white blood cell counts, which can sometimes be mistaken as a signal of illness.

Published in Blood Advances, these first of their kind reference ranges for children and adults aim to improve clinical decision making, reduce barriers to clinical trial participation, and support more equitable care for individuals with Duffy null status.”Mehak Trehan: Why ANC Reference Ranges Should Reflect Genetic Diversity
