Safaa Hilal: POCUS in the Evaluation of Perioperative Troponin Elevation
Safaa Hilal, Managing Director at Egyptian Society of Anesthesiology and Acute Care (ESAAC), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In ICU and perioperative patients, troponin elevation is common and may be associated with myocardial oxygen supply–demand imbalance, systemic inflammation, hemodynamic instability or coronary thrombosis.
The clinical decision should integrate:
- Hemodynamic status and oxygenation
- Serial troponin changes
- ECG findings
- Bedside echocardiography / POCUS
- Underlying disease and clinical trajectory
POCUS can identify new regional wall-motion abnormalities, ventricular dysfunction or right ventricular strain, but no isolated finding establishes the mechanism of troponin elevation.”
