James P. Crowley: DOAC Testing Under 50 ng/mL Safely Expedites Urgent Hip Fracture Surgery
James P. Crowley, Professor of Medicine emeritus at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Geriatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, adding:
“In urgent scenarios such as hip fracture management, every hour of delay increases the risk of mortality and medical complications.
Clinical cohort analyses demonstrate that a DOAC concentration of < 50 ng/mL safely allows surgery to proceed without an increase in blood transfusion rates or 30-day mortality compared to non-anticoagulated cohorts.
Relying on concentration testing safely expedites care because many patients drop below this threshold well within 24 hours of their last dose.”
