“Pulmonary Embolism: The Silent Emergency We Need to Talk About
A pulmonary embolism (PE) happens when a blood clot – usually formed in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) – travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow.
It’s more common than most people realize, and it can be life-threatening if missed.
Warning signs to never ignore:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Sharp chest pain that worsens with breathing
- Rapid heart rate
- Coughing (sometimes with blood)
- Swelling or pain in one leg
Who’s at higher risk:
- Long periods of immobility (long flights, bed rest, desk-bound jobs)
- Recent surgery or hospitalization
- Pregnancy or hormone therapy
- A personal or family history of blood clots
- Cancer, obesity, or smoking
Why it matters:
PE is one of the most preventable causes of sudden death – yet it’s frequently misdiagnosed as anxiety, a pulled muscle, or a chest cold because the symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for something less serious.
What you can do:
- Move regularly during long trips or desk work
- Stay hydrated
- Know your personal risk factors
- Seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear – don’t wait it out
