Anita Singla: Thalassemia Screening in Pregnancy Has a Lifelong Impact
Anita Singla, Senior Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cloudnine Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thalassemia screening in pregnancy is a simple test with a lifelong impact.
Many couples are healthy-looking carriers and may not know it. A CBC with red-cell indices and Hb electrophoresis/HPLC can identify carrier status early. If the mother is a carrier, the father should also be tested.
When both partners are carriers, each pregnancy has a 25% chance of thalassemia major—a condition that may require lifelong blood transfusions and specialised care. Early genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis help families make informed choices.
Cord blood stem cells may help in selected cases through a matched donor transplant, but cord blood banking is not a substitute for thalassemia screening.
Screen early. Test both partners. Plan a healthier future for your baby.”
