Cesar de Almeida Neto, Medical Manager at Hospital Nove de Julho, Head of Apheresis Department at Pró-Sangue Foundation Hemocenter of São Paulo, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A relevant change for Transfusion Medicine and clinical practice.
Jehovah’s Witnesses have updated their position: accepting or donating red cells, platelets, plasma, and white blood cells is now an individual matter of conscience.
Their position regarding whole blood remains unchanged.
In daily practice, this means we should no longer assume that a Jehovah’s Witness will automatically refuse a specific blood component.
Each decision should be individualized, with clear communication between the patient, clinical team, and transfusion service.
An important update for patient autonomy and transfusion planning.”
