David McIntosh: UK Plasma Action – a Founder’s Reflections

David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”UK Plasma Action – a Founder’s Reflections

The UKPA campaign, launched in June 2019, was aimed at the discontinuation of a 23 year-old ban on the pharmaceutical use of UK donors’ plasma.
Much has happened since then and much good work has been done.  Our donations are once again contributing to the manufacture of some vital plasma-derived medicines. The worst of the waste has been halted.

However, it seems appropriate, seven years on, to pause and reflect on the progress made so far – and the extent to which more action is still required.
The 20th Century fears about alleged risks of Variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease in this context have now finally been dispelled.
However, the full Regulatory consequences and Healthcare gains from this welcome development are yet to be realised.

There is unfinished business here…….”
