David McIntosh: The Lifesaving Role of Blood Donation in Maternal Care
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared White Ribbon Alliance Kenya’s post on LinkedIn:
“However much one might hope that this post should be unnecessary, the fact is that it’s relevant – and vitally important – for over 100 countries in our sadly unequal World.
With thousands of young women dying every day for lack of timely blood transfusions, please do repost this as widely as possible.
As the WRAK points out, these deaths are utterly unnecessary and easily avoidable – with just a little more National Willpower!”
White Ribbon Alliance Kenya shared a post on LinkedIn:
“No woman should lose her life while bringing life into the world; especially when the solution exist.
Yesterday, the world marked World Blood Donor Day.
At White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, we are using this moment to urge every Kenyan and the world to take up their role in protecting our mothers.
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH)—severe bleeding after childbirth—remains the leading killer of mothers in our country and globally.
When a mother faces this sudden emergency, her life depends entirely on one thing: immediate access to safe blood
Your blood donation is quite literally the bridge between life and death.
It stabilizes her body, protects her vital organs and gives her the strength to survive.
But here is the critical challenge: Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only be given.
When a mother is bleeding on a delivery table, there is no time to search for a donor or wait for testing.
To save her life, that blood must already be sitting on the hospital shelf, ready to go.
We cannot talk about safe delivery when our hospitals have empty blood banks.
A midwife cannot save a bleeding mother with empty hands.
These maternal deaths are 100 percent preventable, but only if we stock the shelves before the emergency strikes.
We call on corporate leaders, policymakers and everyday citizens to advocate for stronger blood banking systems and to commit to regular blood donation.
Don’t wait for a crisis to touch your family.
Roll up your sleeve today, donate blood and ensure a newborn baby goes home in their mother’s arms.”
