Erin Soule-Albridge: Effects of Platelet Transfusions in Neonates in the NICU
Erin Soule-Albridge, Research Assistant III at Boston Children’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last March, I had the opportunity to give an oral and poster presentation of our work at the Cell Biology of Megakaryocytes and Platelets GRC and GRS.
As my first ever oral presentation at a conference, it was a big leap from presenting to just 5 people to about 200!
It was an incredible experience connecting with fellow scientists who asked thoughtful questions and provided new insights.
I’m excited to share that since then, our work has been published!
Spoilers for the paper below!
In our study, we investigated the effects of platelet transfusions in neonates in the NICU, identifying novel inflammatory responses (increases in the cytokine RANTES and neutrophil extracellular traps) that may help explain the negative outcomes seen with liberaly transfusing adult platelets into neonates.
We also identified potential factors influencing these effects (platelet unit storage time and free mitochondrial DNA concentration).
Thank you to all the collaborators who made this work possible, and for the privilege to showcase our work!
Bonus: Can you spot the Erin in the photo?”
