Hamza Rafiq: How Does a Deep Vein Thrombosis Become a PE?

Hamza Rafiq, Physician, shared a post on X:

“As a physician one of the most critical vascular emergencies we monitor for is a Pulmonary Embolism (PE).

I’ve attached an animation showing exactly how a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) becomes a PE.

When a blood clot in the leg breaks free it travels up the venous system passes through the right side of the heart and becomes lodged in the pulmonary artery.

This blockage severely restricts blood flow and oxygen exchange in the lungs.

Recognizing DVT symptoms early such as localized leg swelling cramping pain and redness is essential to preventing this life threatening complication.

Educational only. See a clinician for real symptoms.Animation by me.”
