“A recent publication in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis provides important insights into the epidemiology of venous thromboembolism (VTE) during pregnancy and the postpartum period, based on the French prospective multicenter HEMOTHEPP study.
This work reinforces several critical points:
- Pregnancy remains a profoundly prothrombotic state, with risk peaking in the postpartum period
- VTE continues to be a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality
- Timely risk stratification and thromboprophylaxis are essential, yet still inconsistently implemented in clinical practice
From a hematology perspective, this study is a strong reminder that:
- Physiological changes in coagulation during pregnancy can unmask underlying thrombophilia
- Multidisciplinary management (hematology–obstetrics collaboration) is crucial
- There is a need for context-adapted national protocols, especially in regions with limited resources
As we continue to improve maternal outcomes, translating such epidemiological data into practical clinical pathways should remain a priority.”
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Eloïse Laouenan et al, adding:
“Epidemiology of Venous Thromboembolism During Pregnancy and Postpartum: Results from the French Prospective Multicenter HEMOTHEPP Study
In over 20,000 women, postpartum VTE incidence was twice the expected rate, thromboprophylaxis was significantly underprescribed, and its effectiveness in intermediate-risk women remains uncertain — underscoring an urgent need for targeted randomized trials.”
