Indre Ceponiene: Major Gaps in Secondary Cardiovascular Prevention Across Europe

Indre Ceponiene, Head of Cardiovascular CT Department at The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As a national investigator, I am proud to share the primary results of the EUROASPIRE VI survey presented at the ESC Congress 2026.

The study included 8,590 patients across 27 countries, evaluated a median of 13.2 months after an index cardiovascular event.

It showed profound variation in how well secondary prevention targets are achieved between countries.

Across the cohort, the residual risk burden remained unacceptably high:

  • 83percent had LDL C above 1.4 mmol/L
  • 60percent had blood pressure above 130/80 mmHg
  • 31percent had chronic kidney disease

These findings echo international evidence that lipid and blood pressure targets are frequently not attained after coronary hospitalisation.

For Lithuania, the results are cautiously encouraging and definitely a step forward.

Our 14percent guideline target score places us closer to the international middle and represents the one of the best performances among the participating high risk countries.

Nevertheless, this also means that many patients remain above recommended lipid and blood-pressure targets after a coronary event an important call to further strengthen long term, guideline directed care.

One particularly positive finding is cardiac rehabilitation: 78percent of Lithuanian patients attended rehabilitation, the second highest result among participating countries.

This is an important national strength that should be protected, sustained and further developed.

Participation in cardiac rehabilitation was associated with:

  • Better blood pressure control
  • Better LDL C and HbA1c target attainment
  • Better kidney function
  • Significantly greater use of antiplatelets, lipid lowering therapies and beta blockers.
