Jacob Kelly: AHA Review Highlights Coffee’s Cardiovascular Benefits
Jacob Kelly, Governor of Alaska Chapter at American College of Cardiology, Preventive and Performance Cardiologist at Alaska Heart Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For twenty years, my patients have asked me the same question: Is my coffee hurting my heart?
I used to say quit, especially if the patient’s heart raced.
This week a new American Heart Association scientific statement confirmed what two decades at the bedside had already taught me: for most people, this advice was wrong.
The practicing-cardiologist, coffee drinking (I’m biased) version of what it says:
- Up to 3 to 5 cups a day is safe for most adults and is linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, stroke and atrial fibrillation. A randomized trial tied caffeinated coffee to 39 percent less atrial fibrillation recurrence.
- The dose is not linear. Risk for most heart outcomes bottoms out around 3 to 4 cups, then climbs back up. Blood pressure runs the opposite direction.
- The source is key. Coffee and tea trend protective. Energy drinks, often stacked with alcohol or stimulants, are where the real harm shows up in our ERs.
- It is the kind (of caffeine), the count and the cream. Unfiltered coffee raises LDL, a paper filter fixes it and sugar and syrup erase the benefit.
Some people are genuinely caffeine-sensitive.
If it triggers your rhythm, I’m sorry, pass on the coffee.
Trust yourself.
You probably know best.”
