Jan van der Merwe: Meet the Inspiring Doctors Behind the Angels Stroke Heroes Podcast
Jan van der Merwe, Co-Founder and Project Lead at The Angels Initiative, Founder of FAST Heroes, Author of The Angels Way, shared on LinkedIn:
”We launched the Angels Stroke Heroes podcast in December 2025 as a platform for individuals who inspire the global stroke community to tell their own stories in their own words.
What we didn’t expect was the strong emotions this project would at times elicit as doctors invited onto our podcast trusted us with their personal experiences.
Our interviews with Dr Claudio Jiménez (ep 7), Prof Sheila Martins (ep 11), and Prof Danilo Toni (ep14) in particular spring to mind, and an upcoming episode with Ukrainian neurosurgeon Dr Yurii Cherednychenko is one to bookmark.
Our recent conversation with Latvia’s Dr Kristaps Jurjāns (ep 15), was as satisfying and entertaining as we’d expected it to be – his generosity, like that of all the doctors who accept our invitation, isn’t something we take for granted.
Episode 16 went live this week, in which have the pleasure of getting to know Dr Sándor Nardai, a licensed interventional cardiologist, neurologist and neurointerventionist whose hospital in Hungary does upwards of 700 thrombectomies per year.
His goal is to help establish an endovascular stroke treatment network in Hungary that is as effective as the acute PCI network, he says. ‘That would be the kind of legacy that I would want to put my name to and and it’s reachable. We are working on it every day.’
In comments you will find links to Sándor’s episode, and to the podcast page on our website, where you can access all our episode to date.
Consider sharing them with your teams, and especially doctors at the start of their careers, as an encouraging reminder that every great story starts at the beginning.”
