Jimmy Lowery: The Clinical and Financial Responsibilities of Blood Bank Inventory
Jimmy Lowery, Principal Consultant at Lagniappe Laboratory Consulting LLC and Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist at UNC Health Rex, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Blood Bank inventory is both a clinical and financial responsibility.
Red cell and platelet wastage isn’t just a supply issue; it’s a leadership issue.
Every expired unit represents:
- Donor effort
- Processing cost
- Hospital acquisition expense
- Lost clinical utility
But aggressive minimization strategies can also create risk:
- Stockouts during emergencies
- Delayed availability for complex antibody patients
- Increased emergency release exposure
Effective transfusion service leadership requires balancing:
- Clinical safety
- Financial stewardship
- Data-driven forecasting
- Hospital-wide utilization patterns
Inventory management should be reviewed not just within the blood bank, but also at the executive level.
If asked today, could you quantify your expiration rate and explain your mitigation strategy?”
