José Antonio García Erce: Fall of While Blood Donation And Apheresis Growth in Spain

José Antonio García Erce, Director of the Donation Center, Navarre Health Service (Osasunbidea), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Transfusion Centre and Services Activity Reports 2024 (I)

The Spanish Transfusion Medicine Activity report is now available.

At first reading, donation remains stagnant in absolute figures, although the rate per 1000 inhabitants decreases, due to the increase in population. Whole blood donation fell slightly (-0.7%), but apheresis donation grew (+10.21%), accounting for only 7.4% of donation.

The growth in apheresis has been at the expense of a significant growth in plasmapheresis (+13.89%), a slight increase in multicomponent donation (+1.06%), and a decrease in thrombocytapheresis (-6.81%).

However, despite this increase in plasmapheresis, the increase in plasma production (471,995 L, +2.46%) and a decrease in plasma consumption (-3.84%), only 427,492 L could have been sent to industrial fractionation (+2.32%).

Due to population growth, Spain would only be 8.83 litres of plasma per 1,000 inhabitants sent to the fractionation industry (Grifols), far from the European average of 17.12 litres of plasma per 1,000 inhabitants, and the 20 litres target of Plan SUPPLY.”
