Jyotishbhai Patel: Why India Needs Universal Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell and Thalassemia

Jyotishbhai Patel, Chief Executive Officer at Sickle Cell Treatment and Research Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Sickle cell and Thalassemia are common in India.

Both are genetically inherited and need early diagnosis and care by team of experts health care provider.

In USA and even in Africa new born screening for Sickle cell and Thalassemia diagnosis exist, sadly India is lacking such initiative.

Every family needs to be screened for both to curtail rise in prevalence and disease burden.

With help of HPLC this can be done easily.

I would request concern Ministry in India and intervene.

Late diagnosis kills many such sufferer at early age.

Here is a child with Sickle cell disease(SS) diagnosed at four month age at dedicated outreach clinic: Sickle Cell Treatment Centre, Bodeli Chhotaudepur Gujarat India.”
