”Pregnancy and HHT: Planning for the safest possible journey
For most women with Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), pregnancy is successful. However, because HHT can affect blood vessels in the lungs, brain and other organs, every pregnancy should be considered high risk and managed with appropriate specialist care.
Good planning before and during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of complications for both mother and baby.
Key areas of care include:
- Screening for arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) before pregnancy where appropriate.
- Monitoring and treating anaemia.
- Assessing oxygen levels and investigating new or worsening breathlessness.
- Planning the safest anaesthetic approach if required.
- Developing an individualised birth plan with the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensuring appropriate follow-up after delivery.
No two patients with HHT are the same.
A personalised care plan, developed in collaboration with HHT specialists, obstetricians, anaesthetists and other healthcare professionals, is essential to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Raising awareness of these recommendations helps ensure that people living with HHT receive the specialist care and support they need throughout pregnancy.
