Maryum Salim Reflects on Her Experience at the HTRS SEARCH Workshop
Maryum Salim, Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. Student Rutgers University, shared on LinkedIn:
”I had the pleasure of being selected to attend the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society SEARCH Workshop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this past weekend.
Through this program, I learned the basic science and history that laid the foundation of the hematology field.
I also learned about novel discoveries in gene therapy that have potential to treat blood disorders and how to develop the scientific questions that lead to these findings.
Additionally, I participated in laboratory demos at Versiti Blood Research Institute that applied my newfound knowledge in hematology and concepts that I’ve learned in the classroom.
Hearing from SEARCH faculty and the pathways that lead them to where they are now left me with a deep sense of inspiration.
I gained insight into what it means to be a physician scientist, specifically a clinical hematologist doing blood research.
Furthermore, the emphasis on community and giving back was exhibited by the collaboration with KIDS MATTER INC. during the workshop.
We stuffed and personalized teddy bears for children in foster or kinship care who have experienced neglect or abuse.
The bears we made will go into the care packages that each child receives when they are placed into the program.
Finally, the SEARCH Workshop welcomed me into the caring community that is HTRS.
I was able to network and build relationships with like-minded students ranging from undergraduates, doctoral, and medical students.
It was important to be in a space with peers and field experts who value representation and equity in medicine.
It served as a reminder to keep striving and to lift as you climb.
I left SEARCH knowing that I had belonging, support, and mentorship that will propel me to achieve my goals.
I want to express my gratitude to everyone apart of the SEARCH Workshop this year, it was truly a one-of-a-kind experience!
I also want to thank Anandi Krishnan for introducing me to the program and encouraging me to apply.”
