Michael Makris: Data Security and Research Integrity in Population Biobanks
Michael Makris, Emeritus Professor of Haemostasis and Thrombosis at University of Sheffield, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This is worrying, both from a scientific, as well as a personal level, since I am one of the participants in the UK Biobank.
Despite the claims in the media, I have not received anything from the Biobank with information about this issue.
Is it right that the first mention is from the national television news, with no communication from the Biobank, even 4 days since the breach (so far).
I am still proud to be participating in this important study, but I would like to read the report of what went wrong.
The Biobank is proud that so far 18,000 papers have been produced based on the analysis of its data.
But what is the quality of these 18,000 papers?
As an editor, we get many papers analyzing the UK Biobank data where the quality of the analysis or the need for the papers is questionable.
Are many of these papers contaminating the scientific literature?
Perhaps it is time for the Biobank to reconsider whom they share the data with and decide if the proposed analysis makes sharing of the data essential.”
