Mohammed Al Kanan: Advancing Therapeutic Drug Monitoring in Pediatric Aplastic Anemia
Mohammed Al Kanan, Director of Research and Studies at Ministry of Health Saudi Arabia, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Qian Xu et al. published in Frontiers in Pediatrics, adding:
“Pleased to see another manuscript I had the opportunity to peer review in July now officially published in Frontiers in Pediatrics:
‘Correlation analysis of cyclosporine A trough concentration with hematological and biochemical parameters: a retrospective study in pediatric aplastic anemia.’
This study explored an important aspect of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in pediatric aplastic anemia, examining the relationship between cyclosporine A trough concentrations and routinely available hematological, hepatic, and renal markers.
One of the most interesting findings was the significant relationship between CsA exposure and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), particularly during the first three months of therapy, suggesting that BUN may help reflect early renal hemodynamic effects and reinforce the importance of close renal monitoring during CsA treatment.
The study also reminds us that drug concentration alone does not tell the whole clinical story. Hematological recovery was not consistently correlated with CsA trough concentrations, highlighting the complexity of treatment response and the importance of individualized monitoring.
