Punit Mathur: From Leg Pain to Life-Threatening Pulmonary Embolism

Punit Mathur, Staff Technical Program Manager at Intuit, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Leg Pain, Slight Discoloration, and a Life-Threatening Wake-Up Call.

A few weeks ago, my wife Garima experienced swelling and slight discoloration in her right leg. We initially visited an orthopedic doctor, but the X-ray came back clear. We were prescribed painkillers and advised to monitor her for a few days.

When the pain didn’t subside, we consulted a general physician, who attributed it to low hemoglobin, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D levels. We got the recommended injections and returned home, assuming everything was under control.

Then came August 18th — a day forever etched in my memory.

When I returned from work, I found Garima collapsed near the sofa, struggling to breathe and experiencing severe chest pain. With the help of our neighbors, I rushed her to the emergency room. Her heart rate was dangerously unstable.

Advanced testing and imaging revealed a massive blood clot blocking the artery in her lungs — a life-threatening condition known as a Pulmonary Embolism.

After an agonizing 5 days in the hospital, including 4 nights of constant anxiety, Garima is finally back home. She is currently very weak and needs support even for simple tasks like walking to the restroom, but she is on the path to recovery. It will take another 3 to 4 weeks before she can gradually return to her normal routine.

I am sharing our story to raise awareness about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). What started as seemingly ordinary leg pain was actually a blood clot that traveled to her lungs. If you or a loved one ever experience unexplained leg pain, persistent swelling, or skin discoloration, please don’t ignore it. Ask your doctor to evaluate for DVT immediately — it could save a life.

This experience has been a sobering reminder of how fragile life truly is. We spend so much time planning for the future, often forgetting how quickly everything can change in a single moment. Plan for tomorrow, but make sure to live for today. Hold your loved ones close, be kind, and practice gratitude.

We are deeply thankful to the medical team, our supportive neighbors, and the higher power that protected Garima and gave our family a second chance.”
