Salim Virani: The 2026 ACC/AHA Multisociety Dyslipidemia Guideline Promotes Early Prevention

Salim Virani, Vice Provost, Research, Endowed Professor in Medicine and Cardiology, Professor in Population Health at Aga Khan University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The 2026 ACC/AHA multisociety Dyslipidemia Guideline introduces important shifts in how we think about cardiovascular risk prevention and one message stands out clearly:don’t wait to act.

In the first of a 5-part video series from my recent presentation at MonteHeart Imaging and Clinical Lectures, I discuss two key concepts that could significantly influence clinical decision-making:

  • Start earlier to reduce lifetime exposure to LDL cholesterol and lower cardiovascular risk over the long term. (Evidence supporting early treatment of raised LDL-C levels)
  • Use prevent risk equations to better assess both 10-year and 30-year ASCVD risk. (PREVENT vs. PCEs, advantages of using PREVENT over PCE, what is the difference between discrimination and calibration)

The goal is simple:

move from reactive care to proactive prevention.

Watch Part 1 below and join the conversation: how are you incorporating long-term risk assessment into discussions with younger patients?

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing the remaining concepts from the guideline.

Follow along and stay tuned for Parts 2–5.”
