“Why the Peripheral Blood Smear Still Matters in the Age of Automation??
Modern hematology analyzers are fast, precise, and flag abnormalities in seconds. But they still can’t replace what a trained eye sees under the microscope.
A smear tells the story numbers alone can’t:
- Red cell morphology — target cells, schistocytes, sickle cells
- True platelet clumping vs. pseudo-thrombocytopenia
- Blast cells an analyzer might just flag as ‘abnormal lymphocyte’
- Parasites like malaria — invisible to the machine entirely
- In hematology, automation gives you speed but the smear gives you certainty.
Some things in diagnostics just aren’t meant to be fully automated.”
