Shimels Tessema: World Hemophilia Day 2026 in Ethiopia Focuses on Advancing Diagnosis, Awareness, and Care

”Today, we celebrated world hemophilia day 2026, with our patients at Tikur Anbessa Specilized Hospital.
This year’s theme is ‘Diagnosis, first step to care’.
Even if around 6000-12,000 people are expected to be affected by this genetic bleeding disorder, only 587 patients are registered in Ethiopia.
With Ethiopian Hemophilia Society, treatments are now expanding to the regions, with factors available in Hawassa, Gonder and Mekelle.
Heamophilia should be suspected in individuals presenting with history of easy bruising, ‘spontanous’ bleeding particularly into joints, muscles and noncomparable excessive bleeding after injuries.
Coagulation profiles can be done and once aPTT is high, patients should be sent to treatment center.
I also presented our study result on assesment of Quality of life in hemophilic children in Ethiopia.”
