Tsigereda Bekele: Deep Vein Thrombosis vs Pulmonary Embolism
Tsigereda Bekele, Professional Nurse at MCM Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, shared a post onĀ LinkedIn:
“DVT vs Pulmonary Embolism (PE):
Two Conditions That Can Become a Medical Emergency
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) are closely related conditions that fall under the category of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE).
Recognizing the warning signs early can help prevent serious complications and save lives.
DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis
What Is It?
A blood clot that forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs.
Common Risk Factors
- Prolonged immobility
- Recent surgery
- Pregnancy
- Smoking
- Obesity
Common Signs
- Leg swelling
- Leg pain or tenderness
- Warmth
- Redness
Main Problem
A blood clot forms within a deep vein.
Pulmonary Embolism
What Is It?
A blockage in a pulmonary artery, usually caused by a clot that has traveled from the legs.
Common Signs
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Rapid heart rate
- Chest pain
- Anxiety
- Low oxygen levels
Main Problem
A clot blocks blood flow to the lungs.
Key Difference
- DVT = Clot in the Vein
- PE = Clot in the Lung
A DVT can become a PE if the clot breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs.
Clinical Pearl
Not every patient with a DVT has obvious symptoms.
Sudden unexplained shortness of breath should always be taken seriously.
Early recognition and treatment can significantly reduce complications and improve outcomes.
Assessment Priorities
- Leg Assessment
- Respiratory Status
- Oxygen Saturation
- Chest Pain Evaluation
- Risk Factor Identification
- Early Escalation of Concerns
Think Clot.
Assess Early.
Act Quickly.
Because preventing a clot from reaching the lungs can save a life.
‘Early recognition of venous thromboembolism can make a life-saving difference.'”
