Wolfgang Miesbach: A Standout Talk by Jeffrey Weitz at ISTH 2026
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”ISTH 2026, Paris — more than 6,800 delegates, the largest ISTH Congress in over a decade, and plenty of outstanding presentations.
One of my highlights was not in a lecture hall: it was on a small stage in the exhibition hall, in the ISTH New Frontier Forum.
Jeffrey Weitz laid out the whole case for FXI/XIa as a target:
- Severe congenital FXI deficiency — bleeding after surgery or injury, almost none spontaneously; protection from ischaemic stroke and VTE, but not from myocardial infarction.
- High FXI roughly doubles the risk of venous thrombosis; low FXI cuts arterial and venous events by half or more.
- In animals, FXI inhibition blocks thrombosis without adding bleeding.
- Dispensable for haemostasis, essential for clot propagation.
Credit to the format: 15–20 minutes, open stage, headphones, questions straight after, and microlearning modules on ISTH Academy to follow up.
No warm-up — reach the point and defend it.
More of this, please.”
