Annette Malek Becker on Incorporating palliative zh+sh Care in Neurology
Annette Malek Becker, Physiotherapist at Physio8834 Physiotherapy with a focus on neurorehabilitation – Parkinson’s disease, shared on LinkedIn:
”An intense day with many eye-opening moments: yesterday, at the Zurich Forum for Health and Medicine / palliative zh+sh, I had the opportunity to attend a one-day seminar by Dr. Christoph Gerhard on the topic of “Palliative Care in Neurology.”
Particularly impressive was the focus on the limited autonomy of many neurological patients and the invitation to adopt a “searching attitude”: away from “What is wrong with the patient?” to “Who is the patient?” Taking the “natural will” into account provides valuable guidance, especially when classic notions of autonomy reach their limits.
Using dementia, Parkinson’s disease (PD), and delirium as examples, key aspects of neuro-palliative care were explored in depth and a clearly resource-oriented perspective was developed—away from deficits and toward quality of life and meaning at the end of life.
As a physical therapist who works with ALS, Parkinson’s disease (PD), stroke, and MS patients, I am taking away concrete ideas that I can immediately incorporate into my interdisciplinary work—both in a team setting and directly at the patient’s bedside.
My conclusion: palliative zh+sh Care belongs in neurology – and in all health professions that support people with complex neurological diseases.
A big thank you to Dr. Christoph Gerhard and the Zurich Forum for Health and Medicine / palliative zh+sh Care ZH for this seminar, which was very enriching in terms of content and human interaction.”
