Nathan Connell: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding Von Willebrand Disease
Nathan Connell, Clinical Chief of Hematology at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, shared on LinkedIn a post about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH, adding:
“One of the greatest privileges of academic medicine is watching a mentee transform an ambitious idea into something exceptional. I am incredibly proud of Yazan Abou-Ismail and delighted to share our newly published, open-access article in RPTH Journal: ‘Von Willebrand Disease: An Illustrated Review.’
I have had the privilege of mentoring Yazan for several years.
He conceived and led this project and personally created every figure and diagram.
The result is far more than a conventional narrative review. It is a beautiful, visually engaging, and clinically practical guide to von Willebrand factor biology, the pathophysiology and diagnosis of VWD, contemporary treatment, challenging clinical scenarios, emerging therapies, and models of care. It was a pleasure for us to collaborate with Peter Kouides and Paula James on this project.
The timing is especially meaningful, as in 1926, Erik von Willebrand published his original description of the bleeding disorder that would eventually carry his name.
One hundred years later, VWD is recognized as the most common inherited bleeding disorder, yet it remains substantially underdiagnosed worldwide. We hope physicians, scientists, trainees, people living with VWD, families, and advocates will use this review to learn more about VWD, support better diagnosis and care, and help raise awareness around the world.
Please join me in congratulating Yazan on this extraordinary contribution and please share the review with anyone in your networks who may benefit from it.”
