Alejandro González Veliz: Most Reported Aspirin Allergies Are Not True Hypersensitivity
Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article by Silvia Grimaldi et al., published in European Heart Journal, adding:
“Aspirin remains one of the most important drugs in cardiovascular medicine.
Yet many patients arrive with a history of ‘aspirin allergy,’ often leading clinicians to avoid a therapy that may be crucial after PCI, ACS, or valve interventions.
The reality?
Most reported reactions are not true hypersensitivity.
A careful history can distinguish intolerance from genuine allergy, and for selected patients, aspirin desensitization can safely restore access to guideline-directed therapy.
Understanding this distinction may prevent treatment delays, suboptimal antiplatelet strategies, and potentially avoidable cardiovascular events.”
