Alejandro González Veliz: The Unbroken Connection Between Heart and Brain
Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The heart and brain are not separate systems.
They are continuously communicating.
For decades, cardiovascular and neurological diseases have largely been studied and managed within separate clinical silos.
A new perspective published in Circulation highlights why this model may need to change.
Heart failure, atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction can be associated with cognitive and mental-health consequences. At the same time, stroke and severe psychological stress can affect cardiac function.
The connection involves multiple pathways — autonomic, neurohumoral, microvascular, immune–metabolic and mechanical.
Perhaps even more importantly, many of the upstream risk factors overlap.
Hypertension.
Diabetes.
Smoking.
Obesity.
Hypercholesterolemia.
Depression.
This creates an opportunity: prevention strategies designed around the whole patient rather than a single organ.
The authors propose a future in which cardiovascular trials consider cognitive and mental-health outcomes when appropriate, brain-focused research incorporates cardiovascular endpoints, and clinical care becomes more integrated across cardiology, neurology, psychiatry and rehabilitation.
The message is simple:
The patient does not experience disease in isolated organ systems.
Maybe our research and healthcare systems shouldn’t either.”
