Ami Bhatt: The link Between Inflammation and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Is No Longer Theoretical
Ami Bhatt, Chair of the inaugural Digital Health Advisory Committee, shared on LinkedIn:
”The link between inflammation and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is no longer theoretical; it’s clinically actionable.
A new American College of Cardiology Scientific Statement, “Inflammation and Cardiovascular Disease” (Mensah et al., JACC, Sept 29, 2025), highlights groundbreaking evidence connecting inflammation with heart disease and offers clear recommendations for how we can detect, treat, and prevent it.
Among the takeaways that caught my eye:
• High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), an inexpensive, accessible test, is now recognized as a powerful predictor of future cardiovascular events, on par with LDL cholesterol in patients with existing disease.
• Lifestyle interventions, including regular exercise, Mediterranean or DASH-style diets, and omega-3-rich foods, remain essential tools to reduce systemic inflammation.
• And most importantly, the field is moving toward a new era of cardioimmunology, where we target inflammation as both a cause and a modifiable factor in heart disease.
As Dr. George Mensah and the writing committee note: “The time for taking action has now arrived.”
For clinicians, this means integrating inflammation screening into risk assessment.
For patients, it reinforces that daily choices such as movement, nutrition, and stress management are not “extras” but core components of heart health.
And for all of us, it’s a reminder that cardiovascular prevention continues to evolve beyond cholesterol alone.
I’m proud to see the American College of Cardiology leading this conversation and setting the stage for what’s next in precision prevention and equitable cardiovascular care.”
