Cy R. Wilkins: Treating Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia Beyond the Platelet Count
Cy R. Wilkins, Assistant Attending Physician of Hematology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in American Journal of Hematology, adding:
“Does treating chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia actually change outcomes that matter to patients — or just the platelet count?
In our study, recently published in the American Journal of Hematology, we compared 165 romiplostim-treated patients with solid tumors and persistent CIT vs. 165 rigorously matched controls:
Takeaway:
- Dose intensity: Significantly fewer chemotherapy dose modifications with romiplostim (45% vs. 66%, p<0.001)
- Survival: No significant difference in 2-year OS overall (HR 0.80); significant mortality reduction in the metastatic subgroup (HR 0.70, p=0.02)
- Safety: No increased signal for VTE, arterial thrombosis, or major bleeding
