Domenico Girelli: How Verona Hospital Transformed ED Anemia Care with Patient Blood Management
Domenico Girelli, Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Head of the Department of Medicine at University of Verona, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Transfusion, adding:
“Patient Blood Management is feasible even in a setting as complex and demanding as the Emergency Department.
In our experience from the Verona Hospital, a pathway linking emergency care to prompt outpatient intravenous iron treatment for stable patients with chronic iron deficiency anemia was associated with:
- Fewer patients receiving transfusions at the initial ED visit: 31% versus 75%.
- Fewer anemia-related ED visits and hospital admissions over six months.
Encouraging results from a small retrospective study, highlighting the value of connecting emergency care with timely, targeted anemia management.
