Gina Sado: Screening-Detected Atrial Fibrillation Carries High Risk of Heart Failure

Gina Sado, Specialist in internal medicine, cardiology resident at Danderyd Hospital AB, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article, published in EP Europace, adding:

“Happy to share that our paper is now published in Europace:

‘Incident heart failure in patients with screening-detected atrial fibrillation: a post hoc analysis of STROKESTOP and STROKESTOP II studies’

Atrial fibrillation (AF) detected through screening is often asymptomatic, and data on its long-term prognosis have been limited. While stroke prevention is often the main focus in AF management, heart failure remains a major driver of clinical outcomes. Using data from the randomized STROKESTOP trials, we evaluated the incidence and risk of heart failure in this population.

Main findings: We observed that individuals with screening-detected AF had a 3- to 4-fold higher risk of developing heart failure compared to those without AF. Notably, this risk was comparable to patients with previously known, clinically diagnosed AF. These observational findings suggest that screening-detected AF is not a benign entity and highlight the need to evaluate comprehensive management strategies beyond anticoagulation alone.

It has been especially rewarding to see this work resonate beyond academia. The study was selected for an official press release and presentation at EHRA in Paris, and featured in Medscape among other medical news outlets.

A heartfelt thank you to my principal supervisor Emma Svennberg for your invaluable support, sharp insight, and dedication throughout this journey. I would also like to thank my co-authors Carl Bonander, Johan Engdahl, Katrin Kemp Gudmundsdottir, Catarina Djupsjö, and Viveka Frykman for a wonderful collaboration and great support.

Finally, thank you to all the STROKESTOP participants, without whom this research would not have been possible.”
