Leonardo Roever: What 73,000 Patients Teach Us About Blood Pressure and Stroke Risk in Dementia

Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Kye-Yeung Park et al, published in Hypertension Research, adding:

”Association between blood pressure and risk of ischemic stroke in individuals with dementia: a national cohort study

Previous research has established a positive correlation between blood pressure (BP) and ischemic stroke in the general population; however, this association has not been investigated in patients with dementia.

A population cohort of 73,130 individuals with a recent diagnosis of dementia, who underwent a Korean national health examination after diagnosis, was followed until the end of 2019.

In conclusion, both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) showed positive linear relationships with the risk of incident ischemic stroke in patients with dementia. Achieving target BP may be important for stroke prevention in individuals with dementia.”
