This systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 observational studies involving 171,748 patients found that systemic immune-mediated diseases (SIDs) were associated with a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular death.
The association was particularly strong in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and was more pronounced among women.
Most cardiovascular deaths were attributable to acute coronary syndrome, with a 34% higher risk observed in SID patients.
Despite substantial heterogeneity and the observational nature of the data, the findings highlight the need for improved cardiovascular risk assessment in these populations.
