Robert Lufkin: The Misleading Concept of Metabolically Healthy Obesity in Childhood
Robert Lufkin, Metabolic Health and Longevity Expert, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Resthie R. Putri et al, adding:
“As a medical school professor, I’ve seen textbooks call it ‘metabolically healthy obesity.’
A new study proves that label is dangerously misleading.
Karolinska Institute tracked 7,275 children with obesity until age 30.
The results in JAMA Pediatrics are staggering:
- 9 percent of ‘metabolically healthy’ obese kids developed type 2 diabetes by 30 (versus 0.5 percent general population)
- 11 percent developed hypertension (versus 4 pesrcent)
- 5percent developed dyslipidemia (versus 1 percent)
Normal blood pressure and lab work in childhood gave ZERO long-term protection.
The good news? Reducing BMI during childhood cut diabetes risk by 78 percent – regardless of metabolic status at baseline.
This is metabolic dysfunction hiding in plain sight.
And it starts in childhood.
Full breakdown coming on the Health Longevity Secrets podcast.”
