Sam Hirniak: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment for Women and Girls with Hemophilia
Sam Hirniak, Postdoctoral Associate at Yale School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“New paper alert.
Our recent narrative review on women and girls with hemophilia (and carriers too) is a great place to start for anyone in healthcare and/or research who is interested in learning more about this unique population.
We have included some quick reference figures on the current nomenclature, the symptoms to look out for, and the treatment options available.
Please feel free to print and share.
During this work, I learned that the first point of medical contact for heavy menstrual bleeding (the most common symptom) is often the school nurse!
So please, share this article (and the associated quick reference graphics) with anyone you know who may interact with women and girls who bleed.
Hopefully, this article will allow healthcare professionals from many distinct areas feel empowered to assist when they can and to refer when they cannot.
Many thanks to everyone involved in this review: Carla Samuel, Faria Aditi, Haya Abu-Ghazaleh, Dawn Rotellini, Menaka Pai, Andrea Edginton. Special thanks to Dawn Rotellini for providing the absolutely crucial patient and patient advocate perspective, and to Menaka Pai for the clinical perspective.
I am really proud of how we blended these perspectives together to create a wider view of the current challenges and barriers to care.
If you would like to chat further, please feel free to reach out.”
