The Diagnostic Value of MRI in Children With Sickle Cell Disease With Bone Pain and Fever – Published in OncoDaily Medical Journal
Ina Khachatryan, Assistant Managing Editor at OncoDaily Medical Journal, shared on LinkedIn:
” New original research article published on OncoDaily Medical Journal by Murtadha Al Lawati et al. examines the diagnostic value of MRI in children with sickle cell disease presenting with bone pain and fever.
The authors highlight that differentiating vaso-occlusive crisis from osteomyelitis remains challenging, as MRI findings often overlap between the two conditions.
Key findings of this study are:
- MRI is highly sensitive but less specific
- Definitive features such as cortical destruction seen in only a small number of cases
- The overlap in MRI findings may contribute to overdiagnosis and unnecessary antibiotic use if imaging is interpreted without clinical context
- Integrating clinical assessment, laboratory findings, and imaging improves diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making
