Ugochi Ogu: What Can Platelet Proteomics Reveal about Pain and Neurocognitive Vulnerability in Sickle Cell Disease?

Ugochi Ogu, Associate Professor Of Medicine at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What can platelet proteomics reveal about pain and neurocognitive vulnerability in sickle cell disease?

This pilot study used high-resolution mass spectrometry to examine ultra-purified platelets from 16 adults with SCD and chronic pain.

Rather than enrichment of canonical pain pathways, the analysis identified differences in neurodegenerative processes, mitochondrial metabolism, ATP regulation, mitophagy and tRNA aminoacylation across pain phenotypes.

The exploratory findings suggest that platelet proteomics may offer a peripheral window into nervous-system vulnerability in SCD, while larger validation studies are needed.

Happy to have collaborated with Keesha Roach who led this study and our co-authors on this work.”
