Zahra Ghasemi: Breaking the Freezer Barrier in Plasma Transfusion
Zahra Ghasemi, Pharmacoeconomist, Member of Health Technology Assessment international and Cochrane, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Lucy Bower et al., published in Transfusion, adding:
“What if plasma didn’t need a freezer to save a life?
I just came across an update from Velico Medical, Inc. and had to share it.
For decades, plasma transfusion has come with a catch: it must stay frozen, then be thawed before use, a serious bottleneck in the exact moments when speed matters most!
Now Velico Medical, Inc.’s new spray-dried plasma just took a major step toward changing that.
In a first-in-human trial, this room-temperature-stable format went head-to-head with standard frozen plasma and matched it on safety, with zero thromboembolic events and similar adverse event rates overall.
No freezer.
No thaw time.
Just plasma that’s ready in minutes, wherever it’s needed: ambulances, rural hospitals, disaster zones, the battlefield.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough in saving lives isn’t a new molecule; it’s making the one we already trust available anywhere, anytime.”
