Rania Al Dweik: Our Role is Not to Decide for Patients, But to Ensure They Understand the Science Behind Their Choices
Rania Al Dweik, Chief Executive Officer & Founder at Sky Health Pharma, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Patient Decision-Making: A Shared Journey, Not a Solo One
Today, I was approached by someone seeking coaching to help decide between two treatment options. Rather than giving a direct answer, I guided her through a structured decision-making process — using a clinical decision support framework to weigh the pros and cons, interpret the clinical evidence, and align it with his personal values and goals.
By the end, she reached her own informed decision — confident, aware, and empowered.
This experience reminded me how crucial it is for patients, especially those without a medical background, to seek expert guidance when making treatment decisions. Clinical choices are rarely black and white; they require context, evidence, and experience.
As healthcare professionals, our role is not to decide for patients, but to ensure they understand the science behind their choices — and help them make decisions that truly serve their health and wellbeing.
We must promote awareness about shared decision-making — where patient values and clinical expertise meet for better outcomes.”
