ICT 2025, 29th International Congress on Thrombosis, Porto, Portugal
During ICT 2025, I had the honor of delivering a keynote lecture titled “Cancer-Associated Thrombosis: Pathophysiological Complexity”, drawing upon over two decades of research in this field.
Our presentation traced the evolution of our findings—from early studies that linked endothelial-related pathways such as nitric oxide and angiotensin II to the behavior, tumor cell shedding, and prognosis of prostate, lung, and endometrial cancers (Clin Cancer Res. 2002 Nov;8(11):3433-7; Cancer Lett. 2003 Jan 10;189(1):85-90; J Pathol. 2004 Mar;202(3):330-5), to our most recent investigations into ovarian and cervical cancers.
We explored the growing body of evidence supporting a bidirectional relationship between cancer pathophysiology and thrombosis, highlighting how each process influences the other (Pharmacogenomics. 2021 Apr;22(6):365-373; Crit Rev Oncol Hematol. 2023 Jun;186:103989; Discov Oncol. 2023 Jan 8;14(1):3; Biochim Biophys Acta Rev Cancer. 2024 Jan;1879(1):189053; J Thromb Thrombolysis. 2025 Jun;58(5):663-678).
A lot of evidence is there to include putative new perspectives for cancer treatment and control,
ICT 2025 was a three-day congress entirely devoted to the study of thrombotic diseases, spanning basic science to clinical applications.
A central theme of the event was the intersection of thrombosis and cancer, emphasizing translational insights from bench to bedside.
I’m truly thankful to Filipe Gonçalves (Session Moderator) and Joao Morais and Luciana Gonçalves for their inspiring leadership and for hosting an excellent International Congress.”
