A recent analysis from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), featured in Stroke and discussed in a Blogging Stroke commentary by Qinglan “Priscilla” Ding, sheds new light on the role of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] in cerebrovascular health.
The study by Chandra, Duran Luciano, and colleagues identifies elevated Lp(a) as a significant risk marker not only for overt stroke but also for subclinical cerebrovascular injury detectable on MRI.
These associations are particularly meaningful for Hispanic/Latino populations, who have been historically underrepresented in cardiovascular research.
As Lp(a)-lowering therapies like olpasiran and pelacarsen advance in development, the findings underscore the potential of incorporating Lp(a) screening into targeted stroke prevention strategies for high-risk groups.
