Shehab Mohamed: Thrombotic Complications in APL Are Not Rare and May Be Underrecognized
Shehab Mohamed, Hematologist at Hamad Medical Corporation, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis, adding:
”New Publication | Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL)
Excited to share our recent work:
‘Beyond Bleeding: Underrecognized Thrombotic Complications in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia – A Single-Center Experience from the GCC Region’
Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis (2026)
PMID: 42007745
APL has long been viewed as a bleeding disorder.
But is that the full picture?
In our study, we highlight an often-overlooked aspect of APL:
Thrombotic complications are not rare – and may be underrecognized.
Key insights:
- Thrombotic events occurred in a meaningful proportion of patients
- Events were observed early, including at diagnosis and during induction therapy
- Both venous and arterial thromboses were identified
- APL represents a hemostatic paradox: simultaneous bleeding and thrombosis risk
Why this matters
These findings challenge the traditional perception of APL as purely hemorrhagic and emphasize the need for:
- Increased clinical vigilance for thrombosis
- Better risk stratification
- Thoughtful consideration of management strategies during early treatment phases
From the GCC region, this study contributes important real-world data to a limited but growing body of literature on APL-associated thrombosis.
Special thanks to Honar Cherif for his valuable input and support.
Take-home message:
APL is not just about bleeding – thrombosis is an underrecognized and clinically relevant complication that deserves attention.”
